one of the first periods during the romantic era is the enlightenment period. the enlightenment period is closely linked with the scientific revolution. the age of enlightenment developed in the area of france, britain and germany and was influenced from austria, italy, netherlands, poland, russia, scandinavia and spain. to end this the enlightenment period was a eightenth century movement in american and european literature.
another time period was the industrial revolution. it was a major shift in techknology, socioeconomic and culture. during this time machinery started taking over manual labor and work conditions for the people maning the machines was critical work and sometimes life threatining.
times back in those days seemed harsh and unruly. people had to find something to escape the reality of life. people had it pretty bad back then and im glad im growing up in the 21 century with all these luxerys of life.
most the poetry i think would be against the enlightenment period and industrial revolution. i think they would discuss about how they disagreed with the way the goverment and economy were woring together.
the first poet im going to talk about is william blake. the poem i read by him is called thde lamb. its about a little lamb who has soft clothing and is by a stream. later he reflects upon the l;amb as a ting boy and i think thats what makes it a romantic type of poetry.
the next poet im going to talk about is william woodsworth i read the poem a complaint by him. i think this a great piece of romantic poetry and i love how he says your love came knocking on my hearts door. that piece was so great and detailed.
the other poem i read was by lord byron and it its called by the rivers of babylon we sat and wept. i liked it even though the writing style remineded me of middle ages poetry.
during the victorian era a n umber of important events took place one being the reform act of 1832. it was an act passed by parilment that introduced changes to the electorial system of the united kingdom. the act granted seats to new cities that were formed during the industrial revolution.
another important event that took place during the victorian era was the rule of queen victoria (1837-1901). queen victorias reign was marked as a great expanstion of the british empire.
one difference between the romantic and victorian periods would have to be the way they treated there children. during the romantic period the childrens work was mainly around machinery as in the victorian but they were more considerate to the children unlike in the victorian period when they were there children non stop and when the kids would fall asleep there were around dagerouse machinery.
in the victorian period poets wrote what they thought and there was no stopping them. they were more realistic poets. beliefs came into contrast here along with political and social veiws on life and liberty.
one of the poets im going to talk about today is lord tennyson. he wrote the poem nothing will die. he is descibeing how life will go eternally and that even though he fears death he beleives that nothing shall die. i like this poem because he is speaking and writing about his own beliefs and ideas. speaking his mind is what i like.
another poet is robert browning. he wrote the poem life in love. this has got to be my utmost favorite poem so far. it descibes love to its fullest in just a matter of a few stanzas and i love it. it almost brought me to tears when he said "To dry one's eyes and laugh at a fall" this poem had to have captured the heart of whoever he was talking about
the third poet im going to descibe is matthew arnold in his poem consolation he depicts life how it is and how he dreams it would be. its kind of like a see saw between reality and a false depiction of life. like how he sees dwarf houses among a beautiful sunset. im sorry but from this poem he seems a little nuts. but what creative artist isnt a little crazy.lol
the last poet im going talk about is thomas hardy. the poem i read by him is called her immortality. this poem is kind of dark considering its about a dead wife talking about how no one cares anymore that shes gone and that her husband has got a new bride and her kids have come to know the new wife to be the mother. its kind of sad brceause even though she passed i just wonder how it affects her and her loved ones for eternity. alot of these poems talk about eternity.

RESTORATION
when james the second took over ( who was a practicing roman catholic) most english people were not impressed and were more opposed to the situation. people were afraid that he was going to hand over england to the pope and people thought that the catholics were behind the great fire of london as well. after the birth of jamesII daughter him and his family fled to france.
i think this was an important time in literature historty and its the point in time when satire was first introduced. i depicted turnabout for england and the rest o great britain. the most important part of thr restoration period was when people stopped questioning god why things were happening and they started turning to science for answers
satire is a type of writing or acting where there is a subject thats either a single peron or group of people who are being made fun of by an impersonater. some examples of satire would be the television show saturday night live, married with children, family guy
i thought this satire to be sickening. it made me a bit weary in the stomach and i was suprissed about how much detail he went into. this is a type of satire. he was trying to be graphic to catch the audiencecs attention. he was talking about how the irish goverment is so cruel and only thinks about the rich that they might as well eat the poor children and that would take care of all the problems.
i read the diary of samuel pepys and he seems like a lazy party goer. all he wants to do is celebrate the new king. he talks about the great fire of london for the most part. it was kind of neat because i know where some of those streets are personally in london so it was cool to relate. another part that i thought was interesing along with funny is when he was talking about being hung over after a long night of drinking and then when he wakes up he goes and gets himself another draft (beer)
i think the most important thing to people in this time was wealth and distractions. first of all money seemed like a big deal, it was almost like the more monet you had the more respected you were and i dont beleive thats right. i also said distractions to because while the rich were enjoying a nice meal, picnic or party the poor were still begging on the streets. the rich almost acted like the poor never even existed so i think that the rich did things like party to distract themselves from what was really affecting them and the city or enviroment and its funny how people still do that today.

The Renaissance -- Sonnets
there are minor differences between shakespears sonnet and spencers sonnet. i found shakespears sonnet to be a little bit more jumpy than spencers and i didnt care for that much. i liked spencers setup better because since it didnt jump around it was easier for me to read. not to mention i understood it better because of that.
shakespears sonnet
In the first section hes asking if he should compare someone or you to a summers day and then he relizes maybe he shouldnt because summer days can be harsh with may winds. he also relizes it might not be a good idea because summer days are way to short. in the second section he is saying sometimes the sun shines to bright and that even beauty fades away because of age. and that its just nature to grow old. in the third section he takes a differnt route or perspective on the subject. he tells the subject that his their beauty is eternal and will never fade dispite the amount of time. in the fourth section he says they will never loose their beauty and death shall not take their beauty either. in the last section he says so long as there is life and people and the world has not come to an end then they shall keep their beauty forever and so long as it lives it will give life to others
Edmund spencer
in the first section he is talking about how oposite of love he is. pretty much how he cant understand love and its mysterious to him. he talks about how different this woman is from him. the more attention he gives the harder to get she gets. in the second section he talks about no matter how hard he tries he still cant seem to pull her in. he says its much easier to atract his own kind . in the third section he talks about even though their opposite of eachother they have finally come together after a long time. in the fourth section he is summing it up by saying that love is so strong that it could even bring people together that were so oposite of eachother.
shakespears sonnet
LX
Like as the waves make towards the pebbled shore,-A
So do our minutes hasten to their end,-B
Each changing place with that which goes before-A
In sequent toil all forwards do contend. -B
Nativity, once in the main of light, -C
Crawls to maturity, wherewith, being crowned,-D
Crooked eclipses 'gainst his glory fight -C
And Time that gave, doth now his gift confound.-D
Time doth transfix the flourish set on youth, -E
And delves the parallels in beauty's brow, -F
Feeds on the rarities of natures truth, -E
And nothing stands but for his scythe to mow; -F
And yet, to times, in hope, my verse shall stand, -G
Praising thy worth, despite his cruel hand. G
in the first section he relates waves crashing on a pebbled shore to the extent of our lives here on earth. also how when those waves fall on the shore thats the end of the journey for them and how that relates to when we come to an end. its almost like when we are born were already starting to die. in the second section he talks about how the subject grew up and became crowned and then how he later died of old age. in the third section he talks about how time takes your youth away from you. its the ways of nature as time takes hold that everyone grows to be old. in the final section he talks about how much he would love to be eternal that he nows that time will take its toll its just a matter of time.
spencers sonnet
Sonnet 75
"One day I wrote her name upon the stand, -A
But came the waves and washed it away: -B
Agayne I wrote it with a second hand,-A
But came the tyde, and made my paynes his pray. -B
"Vayne man," sayd she, "that doest in vaine assay, -C

My verses your virtues rare shall eternize, -E
And in heavens wryte your glorious name. -F
Where whenas death shall all the world subdew, -G
Our love shall live, and later life renew." -G
in the first section he talks about how he writes the girls name in the sand and that he is so lonely and mad at the world or the worlds mad at him because the tide keeps washing away the name in the sand. in the second section the girl gets pissy because she thinks its not a mortal thing to think of immortality. in the third section he talks about how she will life forever with beauty. in the fourth section he talks about how they will live forever together.
my own little love sick sonnet
what gets me through today?
is it knowing true love?
that i cannot say
i fear its soaring up above
i messed up and off she went
when can i let her go?
a message she has not sent
i can't seem to do it, no no no
i have unraveled myself enough lately
god knows when i'll find true love again
wow, what beauty walks so gently
there she goes, i just hope its not a sin
today i sit alone and wait
for my new true love is walking through that gate

march 24-25, 2007
9:30-4:30 both days
i sat through two long lectures at Nikon School. the first day(saturday) both michael swartz and bill durrence talked about digital slr(single lens reflex) bill durrence does mainly wildlife photography and hes done quite a few jobs for national geographic. michael swartz on the other hand has been nominated three times for the pultzer prize, hes had a ten year contract with the usa today so far, worked for life magazine, forbes, national geographic, has photographed famous celebs such as usher and outkast. and so much more. well anyways they did the course all day saturday like i said on digital slr photography. then all day sunday they both taught a course on streamlined workflow technique. which is where they went into teaching techniques in photoshop, capture nx and picture project which is a computer program just for nikon users. then they went into how copyright works and did you know once you take a picture that that picture is copyrighted to you. interesting huh. and the final thing they went into was about how to run a photography buiness mainly freelance. after then final lecture i got to converse privately with michael swartz after everybody else had left and he gave me his email addresse and phone number and told me that if i ever needed help with anything or just needed some adivice i could call him or email him. i felt very privaliged to recieve this from such a well known photographer because he is also ranked as one one of the nations top 10 best photographers by photography magazine.

watch yourself
Thursday, February 8, 2007
The crusades was made up of many battles or conflicts revolving around religeous christianity beleifs. It lasted from 1095ad- 1291ad, so almost two centurys. There was nine major expeditions during the crusades to the holy land. All the campaignes were conducted against the pagans and other people considered to be heretics.
Thomas a Becket was brutally assainated by four knights. The Knights supposedly misunderstood King Henrys remarks about Thomas Becket and thought he meant that he wanted them to kill Thomas. The reason that thomas was not a favorite of the king was because Thomas was Archbishop of canterbury. this means that it was Thomas's job to run messages from the pope to the King and the king was getting tired of the pope trying to tell him how to run his country.
First of all the Magna Carta is considered one of the most important documents in the history of Democracy. since the pope and king John were not geeting along and tended to have many disagreements about unright taxation. A group of villiagers decided to put together and write a legal document (the Magna Carta) limiting the power of the king.
The Black Plauge is notably one of the most devastating pandemics in human history. It was estimated to have killed at least 75 million people, a little more than half of europes population at the time. The plauge was still in effect until the mid 17th century. Theres actually a very interesting assumption to how all the bubonic plauge got started. some people theorize that the mongol army catipulted or threw dead bodies that were infected with the diesease at their enemy or revolting armys.
the knight i a very noble, dedicated and honorable individual.he lets nothing stand in his way. (Truth, honour, freedom and all courtesy. Full worthy was he in his sovereign's war,)
the squire is a true romantic or in other words just another Romeo who can win the heart of any fair lady with just his smile. (With him there was his son, a young SQUIRE, A lover and a lively bachelor,)
The Yeoman is a very self sufficienct person and he only relies on himself that way he could have more diginity in a way i guess.(A forester he truly was, I guess.)
the way he depicts the prioress or nun is as a very tender hearted woman who is a little overwieght or not undergrown as he would say. she wore a coral trinket on her arm which im guessing was worth a good bit considering coral was very rare back then and still is today. and her feelings are hurt easily considering she is very tenderhearted. (She wore a small coral trinket on her arm)
the Monk is depicted as a sporty type of manly man.(An outrider; hunting was his sport;
A manly man, to be an abbot able.)
the Friar was a very merry man, he knew all the gossip because of course people came to confess their sins to him. (A FRIAR there was, a wanton and a merry, A limiter, a very festive man.)
The merchant tried to present himself as a well to do man when really he was in debt(This worthy man kept all his wits well set; There was no person that knew he was in debt,).
now the clerk was not interested in fancy things as fine robes or tapestrys but he was more facinated by books of philosophy written by aristotle and other philosiphers.( For he would rather have at his bed's head Some twenty books, all bound in black or red, Of Aristotle and his philosophy).
Sergent of the law.- was very bright when it came to law and he would let nothing pass him by. (At least it seemed so, his words were so wise.)
the haberdasher, capenter, aras maker, dyer and weaver.- a group of people that were close nit almost like brothers or friends it seemed.(All of one solemn, great fraternity)
the cook- he could cook anything deliciouse and had such good taste he could erecognize a good brew.(He knew how to recognize a draught of London ale.)
the shipman- it seemed to me that this man missed the sea. he seemed sad and lonely and would drink himself sober.(He sadly rode a carthorse, in a gown).
the physician- he was very skilled in the medicine and astrological world. it seemed to everyone that he could cure anybody.(He cared for and saved a patient many times By natural science and studying astrological signs).
wife of bath- she was deaf, but she could make clothes skillfully. (who was somewhat deaf, it is a pity. At making clothes she had a skillful hand)
the parson- he was a godly man who would preach devoutly to many and he used many metaphors in his parishioners. for example(thereunto -That, if gold would rust, what shall iron do?For if the priest be foul, in whom we trust, No wonder that a layman thinks of lust?
the plowman- brother of the parson, he transported manure ever so often and loved god the most. he was also a hard worker.(That loaded many carts with dung, and many other
Had transported; a true worker was he,)
the miller- strong and brawny lad. not only was he strong but he had a lot of other qualities as well. for instance he could tell poetry pretty well even though it was a little obscure and he could play the bagpipes well to.(A bagpipe he could blow well, up and down, And with that same he brought us out of town.)
the manciple- he was well known about the market and he knew the trade of how to buy and sell. (To learn the art of buying victuals)
the reeve- he was very smart not to get scammed out of his crops or grain. because it was like he could read the minds of people and he knew their ways.(There was no agent, herd, or servant who'd cheat; He knew too well their cunning and deceit;)
the summoner- he was an interesting fellow who only pleased himself it seems. he was not the most handsome one out of the bunch and he did not care for interveining people.(He had a face that little children feared)
the pardoner- rode with the summoner. he is what you would call today a pretty boy. he rode in the latest stlye they said and he had beautiful hair supposedly.(This pardoner had hair as yellow as wax, But smooth it hung as does a strike of flax; In driplets hung his locks behind his head,
Down to his shoulders which they overspread; But thin they dropped, these strings, all one by one).
I just got done reading the Millers Tale and i found it to be pretty corrupt and vulgar. I thought Nicolas was pretty creative when he told the carpenter that he predicted there was going to be a flood. He used this as a distraction so he could sleep with the carpenters wife alison. Nicolas told the carpenter that he needed to build three boats. one for himself, one for alison and one for nicolas. and they were to go to sleep in their individual boats the night before the flood. then when night fell and the carpenter fell asleep, Nicolas and Alison both snuck off to bed together.
They were woken up the next morning by the singing of Absalom Before absalom would leave he begged alison for a kiss. he left a little confused, he never relized that alison had a mustache (lol). so anyways he came back a little while later and begged again for a kiss, this time nicolas got up and farted right in absaloms face, well anyways absalom was ready this time and he burned nicolas right in the butt with a hot iron. which lead to a horrible scream that woke the carpenter up. the carpenter cut the rope because he thought the flood had come and he fell to the ground. when all was over nicolas and alison ran off and got married and left the carpenter. everybody thought that the carpenter was insane for thinking there was going to be another flood.
i think it reflect alot of the middle ages. like for instance the clerk absalom trying to win the heart and affection of alison through singing songs and telling poetry. (The words in harmony with his string-plucking).
another similarity between this story and the middle ages is how the carpenter treated his wife. even though women were of great accomplishments. they still were never treated right and they were treated more like objects than people. (Jealous he was and held her close in cage).
the last similarity im going to talk about is the way they dresses back then. in the story it refers to alison wearing a girdle which was typical of women back then. (A girdle wore she, barred and striped, of silk). it also refers to nicolas wearing tights and dressing like they did back in the middle ages.

the Monk is depicted as a sporty type of manly man.(An outrider; hunting was his sport;

Beowulf
I really enjoyed Beowulf it was an exceptional piece of writing. I enjoy listening to folk stories more than reading but in this case reading it gave me more of a insight and it kind of dragged me in after a little while. I prefer books or stories that can catch hold of me there easier to read. The only thing is that i didnt much care for Beowulfs charecter personality that was described in this book.
It reminded me of the Odyssey and how both odysseus and Beowulf were alike. they both were boastful and full of themselves. They both were arrogant and they only worried about fulfilling their pride. But hey they both fought against evil sea monster or evil sea gods in odysseus's case.
The parts that stuck out to me the most were the three battle scenes. my favorite was probably when he defeated Grendals mother with the massive sword that had been blessed with the sea monsters magic, because Beowulf had killed her son. The one when he kills Grendal was cool because i found it to be pretty gruesome in the ways he dismembered Grendals body like that by taking off his arm.
All in all i really enjoyed the story it helped me relize how interesing and entertaing folklore is and it opened my mind. Beowulf has got a great strory plot i believe and will probably be used for lit classes for years to come.
While i was reading Beowulf i relized a major difference in it than the Anglo-Saxon culture. The major difference was that in Beowulf when the referred to god they made it seem like they were referring to one god and in the story they were. while the Anglo- Saxon culture they looked upon many gods. The reason for this is when the monks got a hold of the story they changed it from where there was many gods to where there was only one god and i beleive they did this so that no one would get the idea to worship more than the one true almighty god they belive in and so that the church could hold a certain power over the people. ex(Shield had a son, child for his yard, sent by God)
Loyalty to their kings or leaders in the Anglo - Saxon culture was very important to them personally. for example ( Shield died at his fated hour, went to God still strong. His people carried him to the sea, which was his last request.)
Another popular part of the Anglo - Saxon culturewas reciting poetry and tales. In beowulf it talks about many poets and how people were overjoyed at the poems. ex(The words of the poet, the sounds of the harp, the joy of people echoed. The poet told how the world came to be, how God made the earth and the water surrounding, how He set the sun and the moonas lights for peopleand adorned the earthwith limbs and leaves for everyone.Hrothgar's people lived in joy)
Beowulf is similar to modern day hero stories in that he was very all about him self and self absorbed. One major way that Beowulf differs from many nowadays hero stories is that instead of fighting off bad criminals or bad guys Beowulf fought off sea monsters and other demons and also there was alot more tradition dipicted in Beowulf ( for example-Sometimes a king's man, a warrior covered in glory who knew the old traditions, would be reminded of an ancient song, and he would call up words adorned in truth.) while in todays hero stories all it talks about is the fighting off of the bad man or the hero.
I thought that the way that Beowulf died was kind of depressing. He never got over his overfullfilled pride issues and i found that kind of sad. To sum it all up he was very hubris.
At the time of his death he was probably between 78 and 80 somthin years old but yeat he was still cocky.
When he went off to fight the dragon he didnt go with good cause i didnt think. He went because the dragon was killing his people, but the whole reason the dragon was killing people was because one of Beowulfs men had stolen some gold or treasure from the dragons lair. So i cant blame the dragon for doing the only thing he knows how to do and thats protecting his treasure, but i can blame Beowulfs death on himself by fighting for somthing that wasnt even his with such a big head.

So you want to know me?
Hi my name is John Kelley. I attend school at Classic City High school in Athens, Georgia. I am a senior and will be graduating in either may or this summer. After high school i plan to go to college in or around the Atlanta area and my goal is to major in either photojournalism or just journalism and then minor in photography. Then after college i hope to land a job in major magazines such as Transworld surf or snowboarding magazine, or maybe a major citys newspaper like the Atlanta Journal Constitution. But my dream job would to someday do a freelance job for National Geographic. I enjoy other arts as well as photography. like ceramics, charcoal drawing, pastel work and acrylic painting.
